At Bizzomate we fully embrace low-code modelling in combination with an agile way of working. Over the years we have also discovered that only a small percentage of the innovative applications we’ve developed ‘fly’ independent from data or integration with core backend systems. So these backend systems are crucial for the low-code applications we are developing. However, in some organizations, these ‘legacy’ backend systems are seen as the reason that newborn ideas and applications are not fully taking off; they are perceived as a showstopper for innovation.
We’ve seen that in many cases, it is not the back end systems that prevent low-code projects from taking off. There is usually misalignment in pace and methods that prevent a successful innovation project.
Embracing bimodal IT
How to solve this challenge? The answer lies in truly understanding and embracing bimodal IT. Gartner defines bimodal IT as the practice of combining two ways of structuring processes within an organization, known as mode 1 and mode 2.
Mode 1 is optimized for areas that are more predictable and well-understood. It focuses on exploiting what is known while renovating the legacy environment into a state that is fit for a digital world. Mode 2 is exploratory, experimenting to solve new problems and optimized for areas of uncertainty.
The right combination and collaboration of modes 1 and 2 will result in an organization that can keep its core systems up, running reliably, and at the same time explore the edge. So how do you apply this approach in your organization and can you get these two worlds to reinforce each other?
In our whitepaper Create high impact – break loose with bi-modal, we explain how you can master innovation and trigger a successful digital transformation. The case of the pension planner at AZL highlights the collaboration of modes 1 and 2. Enjoy!
